Tiffany: Let’s start with the most obvious question, why 10-94?
 
Dorien: The name or the company itself?
 
Tiffany: Both
 
Dorien: Well, the name, 10-94 is a police code for requesting back-up. I thought it fitting. As for the company, this started as a “what if” that I texted to my sister. I told her that we needed an app that lets you send a request to anyone in the area to come and record your interaction with police; offer you back-up when you feel less safe. My sister’s text response was incredibly clear, “YES!!”
 
Tiffany: And did you just get to work building it?
 
Dorien: Actually no. It really was a, “what if” to me. I didn’t think about it for about a week after. And then it just hit me while I was out at the movies, I can build that! So, I got to work.
 
Tiffany: So what is the ultimate goal of this app?
 
Dorien:I wanted to develop an effective application for everyone. A simple tool that would help carry out a worthy goal, I want people to feel safe in their community. Now, I admit this company started in anger and frustration. I was exhausted and discouraged from all the violence and the lack of justice. But through this process, with all the positive and encouraging messages from everyone around, my motivation became positive; it became much deeper than just hurt. If people can at least feel safe, maybe, just maybe, both the civilian and the police officer can stay calm. Maybe everyone gets to go home. And that’s worth trying!
 
Tiffany: How do you envision people using the app?
 
Dorien: In truth, I sincerely hope no one has to use it. This app is akin to insurance, if you ever need it, you will be glad you have it. Whenever you encounter the police, with a single tap of a button you can alert the 10-94 community that you would like someone to respond and witness and record your interaction. When you request backup, your location is sent to the 10-94 community and someone can be directed to your location. You can now call for backup! 10-94 is extremely useful for parents to complement their efforts at keeping their kids safe and secure. Parents can buy the app as a gift for their kids and put it on their phone.
